Regulation 3 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (85 of 1993) specifies the requirements for first aid in the workplace. It mandates that employers must provide adequate first-aid facilities and train staff in first-aid procedures.

A Regulation 3 first aid kit in South Africa should contain a minimum set of items that are suitable for the specific workplace environment, which may include:

48 Items:

 x1 100x100mm Burnshield Dressing (Optional)
 x4 Conforming Bandage 75mm
x4 Conforming Bandage 100mm
x4 FAD No. 3 (75x100mm)
x4 FAD No. 5 (150x200mm)
x4 Triangular Bandage – Non Woven
x2 Gauze Swabs Sterile (75x75mm) 5’s
x1 Gauze Swabs Non-Sterile (75x75mm) 5’s
x10 Plaster Strips
x1 Plaster Roll Elastic (25mmx3m)
x1 Paper Tape Non-Allergenic (24mmx3m)
x4 Pair of Gloves
x1 Cotton Wool 100g
x1 First Aid Scissors (Metal)
x1 Metal or Plastic Forceps (Select one)
x1 Safety Pins (12’s)
x2 Wooden or Plastic Splints (Select one)
x2 CPR Mouthpieces
x1 Antiseptic Wound Cleaner (100ml)

x1 Basic First Aid Procedures Booklet

The kit should be periodically checked to ensure that items are not expired or used up. Additionally, the contents may need to be tailored based on the specific risks present in the workplace (e.g., chemicals, machinery, etc.).

Employers are also required to appoint a sufficient number of trained first-aiders according to the size of the workforce and the nature of the work.
